Sunny OutDoor show ends on a high

More exhibitors, more themed areas, and more than 21,000 visitors from 90 countries were a feature of the OutDoor 2017 trade show.

Held in Friedrichshafen, on the shores of Lake Constance in Germany, the four-day show was held in mid-June, and the new air cooling system was reported to be welcomed during a European heatwave.

The new show dates in June – one month earlier than 2016 – met with widespread approval and provide “an optimal basis for the coming business year,” said organisers.

Reports Sportslink European correspondent Hank Aldrich, “For me the highlight of the show was the Keen robot. It makes the Uneek shoe and will soon be in the Keen store in Tokyo, making a pair of shoes in 30 minutes.

“I understand Keen has been working on this for more than two years and it is part of their wish to produce more locally.

“It shows real manufacturing innovation (like many of the 3D printing happening elsewhere), Hank Aldrich says, reporting that while the international visitors were strong, he considered that local support may have declined.

Show partner, the European Outdoor Group industry association, was positive about the event.

General Secretary, Mark Held said, “ Once again, OutDoor was a very good show and delivered a lot of great content for our industry.

Said Dirk Heidrich, OutDoor Show Director for Messe Friedrichshafen, “New initiatives were well received by visitors and offered a clear guide to future trends. With our four new OutDoor Plus areas: Lifestyle Collection, HangOut, Water Sports and Running, we were able to deliver a more comprehensive overview of the market and reach new target groups.”

The new Lake Constance microadventure experience provided opportunities for visitors to note industry trends, organisers said.

OutDoor 2018 will be held on June 17-20, the 25th anniversary of the show’s launch.
